This session presents a proficiency-based e-learning protocol designed to help students assess their skills in relation to course outcomes and take an active role in the learning process. The protocol was originally developed for Spanish language classes, and is a fusion of interactive online elements, in-class activities, and computer lab experiences that are completed throughout the semester. A novel aspect of the project is the linkage between online and offline tasks; the completion of each facilitates student engagement with the others. Preliminary analyses suggest that the proficiency-based assessment has empowered students through a heightened sense of motivation, responsibility, and self-awareness, and that overall it has enhanced their language learning experience. Attendees will learn how online self-assessment can be successfully integrated into in-person classes, experience a language learning self-assessment first-hand, and understand the benefits and challenges related to standardizing a protocol for use across multiple classes and languages.
