There is a lot of buzz about the benefits of “flipped classrooms,” where students learn basic content or skills on their own prior to class and then use class time to apply or synthesize that knowledge with their peers and the instructor. This poster will showcase three courses at the University of Minnesota which range from a course with only a subset of the class sessions taught in a flipped format to a course where all of the lecture content is online and students exclusively participate in groupwork during class time. Attendees will gain a better understanding of what a flipped classroom is, how actual instructors structure pre-class assignments and how instructors use class time to deeply engage students in the material.
